Mugs Stump Award Trip Reports
As long as it was at least a little bit out there, Mugs Stump was always psyched for something, be it a big wall, long free route, frozen waterfall, or high alpine face. A true “climber’s climber,” he wanted to stay on the edge, pushing the envelope of possibility, getting to that rare place where you climb intuitively, fluidly, unburdened by doubt and fear. It’s a legacy worth celebrating, and the Mugs Stump Award, established in his memory in 1993, has recently more than doubled the grants available for 2008.

Gore, announce the recipients of the 2007 Mugs Stump Award. 2/07/06 - Mugs Stump Award sponsors, Black Diamond Equipment, Patagonia, Climbing Magazine, Mountain Gear and W.L. Gore, announce the recipients of the 2006 Mugs Stump Award. Created in 1992 in memory of Mugs Stump, one of North America’s most visionary climbers, the award grants money to small teams pursuing climbing objectives that exemplify light, fast and clean alpinism. 2/02/05 - For thirteen years, the award has supported small teams with climbing objectives that exemplify fast, light and clean alpinism. 3/03/04 - Given annually to climbers attempting alpine climbing objectives that exemplify fast, light and clean tactics, the awards are a tribute to the late Mugs Stump, one of North America’s most prolific and visionary climbers, who died in a crevasse fall in Alaska in May 1992. 5/19/03 - The Mugs Stump Award has announced the recipients of the $15,000 total to be given out this year. |
