American Whit Magro soloed the 700-meter water-ice climb Losar (WI5) in the Khumbu region of Nepal in early February. Magro and Brady Robinson, both volunteering at the Khumbu Climbing School run by the Alex Lowe Charitable Foundation, took time to climb the huge ice line across from Namche Bazaar in January. Magro, a guide for Jackson Hole Mountain Guides, later attempted Cholatse and then returned to Namche, where he free-soloed the ice route in four hours, using a rope and a single protection screw to safeguard the final 100 feet of WI5 ice. He rappelled the route, returning to his pack about six hours after starting.

Robinson noted that future parties attempting Losar may be required to obtain a permit in Kathmandu.
